I am being given a Juwel Rekord 120 - I am soo excited :D

At the moment I have a 50L tank which sits on top of my dining room sideboard. The new one will be almost 2.5 times bigger and I am worried about the weight of the tank when its full. Does anyone know how to calculate how much 120L of water will weigh?

Or does anyone have one this size on an "ordinary" piece of furniture as opposed to a "proper" stand?

Thanks

thanks - I just googled it - which is what I should have done in the first place had I not been so excited LOL

its about 18 Stones!!!!!!

but the Rekord stand looks like any other ordinary flatpack and my sideboard is so much bigger and sturdier than that so it should be ok? right? LOL

I have visions of setting it up and the whole thing crashing to the ground

Hi, a litre of water equals a kilo in weight, plus the weight of the tank and intended ornaments.

Proper stands are normally best but if care is taken then alternatives can be used.

If it is an older style sideboard then it is probably solid wood therefore sturdy.

It is imperative that the whole of the tank is supported and level.

Can you post a photo of the sideboard?

Unfortunately it is a bog standard Argos flatpack :(

I might have to renew it - I don't actually like the stand that the new tank comes with.

hmmm link didn't work

will try and do some pics in the morning.

Get two people to stand on it and see if you can get it to bow/move. If it holds two people standing on it and the surface is flat and level then it should hold a tank no probs.

This is what I did myself

My tank with water and all the gubbins weighs about 13 stone ... so do I so I stood and lay and bounced and wriggled on the furniture it was going on... and thank god it didn't break ... so now my tank sits happily on there ... I now have to find a new place to stand lie bounce and wriggle though :(

Unfortunately not sound advice unless you can get a couple of people to stand on it for a couple of months

It is not just if it can take the weight but if it can take the weight continously  MDF and chipboard can be strong if used 'edge on' as with custom aquarium cabinets but can sag in time if the design is wrong :hey:
