Hi,

I'm hopefully getting a Rena Aqualife tank soon and want to stock it with some big cichlids.

I'm after suggestions please. I want something impressive.

I'm considering Blue Acara or Green Terrors. Maybe Firemouths, not sure.

I also like Frontosa.

The tank will be around 350 litres i reckon so not really room for Oscars.

Can anyone suggest anything else for me to look at?

Cheers

edit: I don't plan on putting all these fish together. It'll probably be a species tank. I'd also like something unusual-ish for breeding purposes.

depends on what type of cichlids you want to dabble in

if its a buiseness venture then prob something along the lines of
Gymnogeophagus meridionalis<google it to see> ,,,,starting of with six,,,,with say 6 emporer tetras and a pair of bristlenoses as reccomended buy another cichlid site,,,,,,,,seen them and think there beautiful mid size cichlid :good:

had some beautiful wild geo's in the lfs a little while back, nice size for a breeding group, we were sorely tempted by them

So are you really looking at getting just one pair? or a pair with a few dithers or a group of cichlids were there is the potential of them breeding?
Also would you prefer Aggressive species such as the GT's or Red Devils or semi aggresive fish like acaras and firemouths?

I may be slightly biased towards this species because i own one but i think the Nicaraguence are quite an impressive fish, especially if you can get them to pair up, They can get to around 8-10" in size and are one of the less aggressive species so you would be ok to add a few more cichlids of a slightly smaller size of between 5-8", i.e. cons, firemouths, blue Acaras, etc.

There are also some nice Geophagus species that can get upto around the 12" mark,

and if you can find them an electric blue Dempsey or two would also look impressive.

You Could do Angelfish or Discus even though they are not cichlids but colorfull and some what unusual.

Angelfish and Discus are cichlids.

If you like Oscars, then (depending on the dimensions of the tank) you're tank should be big enough for a pair. The tank is about 92gallons, so it should be okay so long as you have good filtration, the tank's atleast 18" deep, and you have the time to do larger water changes atleast twice a week.

Visit this website:

There is an admin on there and he is really good, and he has lots of fresh and salt tanks. The website is fairly new i'm guessing, because there is hardly any posts on it. But trust me, you should ask him.

it will not be sutiable for oscars!
as tank is only 77gallons and not 92gallons

77gallons = 350litres!

350 litres
77 imperial gallons
92 US gallons

the basis of an oscar needing 75 Gallons is based on the US measurement

well backtotropical is in uk, so 77gallons is right for him. and i think it is too small as it will be a 5foot tank!

Gymnogeophagus meridionalis

Cheers Nelly. Thats a beautiful fish. Definitely a possibility. Are the commonly available?

Some good suggestions there too Davo. Cheers.

Thanks PRW but i've ruled out oscars. Don't really fancy them.

Keep the suggestions coming please guys. This is exactly what i'm after. :good:
