Hi all, I set up a 60litre tank at the weekend. It is the right temp, the filter is in but how soon can I put some fish in. I have the fish in another tank and want to transfer them into this one. Also, when ready should I float them first.

well move some water from the tank already set up into the new one so u have a bacteria colony. once the tank is cycled u can add the fish. and yes u should float them so they can acclimate to the water. hope that helps! :D

You first must test the water to make sure you can put fish in the tank. Be patient and it will pay off. you can buy cycle which is a bacterial additive. Also stress zyme.

The specific use of stress zyme and cycle is un proven ot ake your cycle go faster... just plain ol ammonia for 2 weeks and keep testing your water paameters... when ammonia is at zero and nitrItes are up a little bit you should be just fine... Should be... lool

Generally speaking, i go for 2 weeks unless they are for guppies only in which 1 week is adequate although not really recomended. As previous comments have said, adding water from established fish tanks can speed up the process.

In my oppinion, the use of de-chlorinators such as aqua safe make chlorinated water safe and cause the other fish less stress. This is because chlorine kills germs and bacteria. The less chlorine, the easier for bacteria to form and grow. Although, still 2 weeks amigo.

There is not set time for cycling. It depends on the tank. Some will take 2 weeks, others can take a month or even more. You'll need to get a testing kit, if you don't have one yet, so you can monitor the cycle. Also, if you're doing fishless cycling (which I strongly recommend) you'll need some pure ammonia too.

If you want to put fish in during cycling (which I would not recommend, as it is very stressful for them and could potentially kill them), you'll need to keep a close eye on the parameters and do water changes frequently to keep the levels tolerable for the fish.

Adding water from a mature tank won't do all that much. Not much bacteria is actually in the water. If you really want to kickstart it, use the filter from your mature tank. Or, put the filter from the new tank and run it alongside the one in the mature tank for a week or so, and you should be pretty much set. Just continue to keep an eye on the parameters and do water changes as needed.

Are the parameters in the other tank the same as this one? If so, much acclimating is not needed...but a little can never hurt.
