I have a tank already(see my profile), but have brought my girlfriend a Eheim 14 us gallon kit. It has fitted light, a Jager heater and an Eheim internal filter. We will set it up next weekend after getting some more sand, wood etc. I have put the sponge for the filter in my tank to start it off, held under the water with a sucker. I was thinking if we use the old water from my tank to fill 75 to 80% of the new tank, plus the sponge that will be a week old, how would this work out? Will it still need cycling, finish off cycling, or would be able to support a couple of fish? I'm quite happy to wait, it's just that I was wondering. :hey:

what your talking about is cloning and it should be able to hold a couple of fish no problem i only left my filter media in for 1 week and it supports 11 fry you may want to leave it in for 2 weeks thought just to be on the safeside

Cheers.

I was thinking of putting the cotton wool type of pad from my mature external, in with the sponge for a couple of weeks, and maybe a couple of hand fulls of sand from the mature tank as well?

All you have to do is put some gravel from your tank into your girlfriends tank (put the gravel in bag of tank water while you head over to her house) and then put the gravel into her tank and put some of your filter media into her filter (put it in tank water while you head over to her house) then go and get some fish.

IMO there isn't really any point in using water from your tank for hers - minimal nitrifying bacteria in there.
Can you take a sponge from your (established) filter and put it into your girlfriends tank? Replace the sponge with a fresh one for your own tank.

We live together, so it makes it's easy to add some water and every little help.
The filters are differant, but her one is in my tank at the moment maturing.
