Hi All

I am pick up my new tank tomorrow and can’t wait :D . Its a Fluval Duo Deep 1000, 100cm long X 41cm Wide X 47 cm High. I think it is around 190 litres, I will be running a Biolife filter that is coming with the tank plus a Fluval 4 plus underwater filter (which currently is in my boyfriends tank) I’m planning on setting it up over the next couple of weeks, and have started to think about what fish to have in it, I will be transferring the following from my other tank:

6 Platys
4 female guppies
1 peppered corys
2 skunk corys

I would like some other fish in there as well, I was thinking of getting a few more corys and maybe a shoal of some sort, I have also seen the Bristlenosed catfish and think they are really sweet.

What do you all think? And what sort of numbers can I put in there? Any suggestions welcome :D i want to get this right :)

numbers wise theryre is a formula for working out tank capacity

length x width divide by 40 i think it is for tropical fish = length of fish in cm total excluding tales

so yours would be:

100 x 41 = 4100 divide by 40 = 102cm of fish

so u could have like 20 platies in ur tank etc...

That's about 51 US gallons so you could probably add 3 or 4 more corys and 6 or 8 tetras, rasboras or other schooling fish. It sounds like you will have adaquate filtration to handle a little overstocking.

Cheers.

Would it be ok with the Bristlenosed catfish or would you suggest I stick to the corys (they are very sweet and i do like them  )

You have plenty of space in your tank for more fish, a bristlenose would be fine too :) .
What are the genders of your current platys?
I would more corys to your group as they are very sociable fish, add another 4 peppered corys and 3 more skunk corys would be good- what sort of different fish are you into?

Thanks for your reply.

I have 1 male and the rest are females (two of which are babies).

I like the Rummy-nosed Tetras, and i had looked at Rams but wasn't sure if i would have enough room or if they would get on, i have also looked at the Dwarf Gourami and like them but again wasn't sure about room.

What would you suggest?

Rummy nose tetras can be quite delicate, not good for a newly set up or cycling tank- i take it you are doing a cycle with fish yes?

Im pinching one of my boyfiends fliters which has been in his tank for about 4 months and he is have one of the ones that i get with the tank to replace it. (He has a 216 litre tank and is running one internal fliter, the one im having, plus an external filter)

The rummy nose tetras should be fine then as long as you are adding the mature tank filter, might want to wait a couple of weeks though after the tank has been set up to be on the safe side- a group of 8 or so rummy nose tetras would be very happy in there though :) .
Are you interested in shrimp at all? Things like ghost or armoured shrimp always make interesting peaceful additions to a community aquarium, don't know much on gouramis or rams so i couldn't say on those though.
You could also try a group of khuli loaches, either black ones or the standard striped ones, they are also interesting peaceful community fish  .

I have looked at shrimp before but always with my Betta tank in mind never thought about putting them in the bigger tank. I like the idea of Khuli loach, how many do you need in a group? Is it 3 to 4?

Yeah they do well in groups of 3-5+, here's some pics of khuli loaches as they can vary a fair amount in patterning;

They are scavengers although they really appreiciate foods like frozen bloodworms, krill and daphinia as well as algae wafers, catfish pelets and blanched cucumber :)

Guppys and platys prefer a bit harder and more alkaline water than kuhlis and rummynoses. Especially rummys are sensitive for too alkaline water.
Skunk botias prefer more warmer water than you corys and livebearers, 26-30 celcius. They also prefer bigger groups and might start to harrass other fish if they get frustrated. Botias are a bit nippy, so veiltailed fish are unfortunately out of the question as tankmates.

I would put a bushynose pleco, 10 more corys and 4-5 more guppies and platys. Pics would be nice as you have finished the setting up :)

Edit; Thanks Thapsus, what a stupid error from me, hopefully i didn't confuse anybody

Actually, it's usually because they're not khulis at all :p The vast majority of 'khulis' are a mix of things like myer's, indian thorn eyes, striped khulis, shelford's and others. But they are all pretty much the same, I don't think theres much difference in size. They do hide a lot though, so I'd go for black khuli's which are generally far more active.

Osteoporoosi means that guppys and platys prefer harder and more alkaline water than kuhlis and rumynoses.

Hi ClaireN :)

Please do get some more corys. They love being in large groups and will add a lot of activity to the bottom of your tank. They will get along fine with khuli loaches, but I wouldn't suggest adding any kind of botias with them.

With that in mind, it would be good to have a substrate of fine gravel or sand. Both corys and khulis prefer it to anything coarse.

I would recommend increasing the number of skunk corys (C. arcuatus) to 5 or 6. If you think you might ever want to breed any corys, why not try some C. aeneus, either bronze or albino, or a combination of the two. They will all get along. There are many other corys to choose from too, and except for a few that require warmer water, they will do well in any peaceful community tank. :D
