hi all,

sorry for asking, but i have read TONNES on this, but have been given different advice!!

my tank has had 6 x danios for 1 week, the ammonia has gone to 0.5 and only to 1 for 24 hours, then back down again. My nitrite was 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 1, 1, 2 (2 being last nights reading). I started everything off with mature gravel and fish flake before the fish came along.

i now have 2 question.

1) should i do a water change (10-15%) to drop the nitrite? or is a certain level needed to mature the bacteria? i.e. no nitrite, nothing for bacteria to multiply with?

2) when am I realistically lookin at adding another fish or two, a book I have says add fish slowly every week, does that sound right?

many thanks

Dave

The nitrite should go down too 0 soon, do water changes every 1-2 weeks

When the ammonia and nitrite levels go down 2 0, wait day or 2 and add another few fish.

1) what i usually do when i have ammonia/nitrite spike is do a daily 25% change until the readings come down to 0.
2) i add new fish every 2 weeks.

I would give it atleast a week once your levels settle before adding any new fish better to be safe than sorry i suppose

thanks for your replies.

I will wait a couple weeks, but have another issue right now :-(

i finished a 7 day course of Melafix (as a danio had a saddle!), and following the label advice did a 25% water change. next day (yesterday) I noticed one of my Zebra danios sticking by himself and not feeding, he is the same today. the other 5 are feeding and charging about as normal.

I cannot give water results until I get home from work (in about 8 hours).

is my little guy in shock? any suggestions?

Dave.
