New Tank Thinking Of Planting But New To It

I got a new tank and was thinking of using live plants. But dont know what kind to use for a begginer. And the kind of gravel to use and what kind of plants. Use lower light with out having to use co2 any advice would be appreciated. It is a 55 gallon tank thanks
