Hey Guys and girls, I have recently set up a tropical fish tank after the last 3 years in marine fish keeping.

my setup is as following

Juwel 400 tank
Fluval FX5 x 2
2 x 300w heaters
1 x air curtain at rear of tank.

I am in the process of trying to cycle the tank. I have gravel and filters from an existing tank but they were left dry for 5 days so i washed them thoroughly using a hose and tap water ( i thought this would have killed them)

Apparently not as my tank glass is now covered in snails that are alive obviously coming out of the gravel.

I have tested the water for the last 3 days and got the following results

Date Test Method GH KH PH Nitrate Nitrite Ammonia Notes
16/05/2011 Strip 30 40 6.5-7 0 0 n/a this was first test before any water conditioners
17/05/2011 Strip 60 60 6.5-7 0 0-20 n/a just after switched 2nd filter on
18/05/2011 Strip 60 80 6-6.5 0 0-20 0 first ammonia test

I have added King British Safe water bacteria but it seems there is no cycle whatsoever with the ammonia being Zero. I expected the dead gravel and filters even after being washed would have some dead bacteria in it that would kick start the cycle?

Dead bacteria won't kick start a cycle; you need to be adding a source of ammonia (either pure ammonia or fish food) and wait for a new colony of bacteria to grow.
