Hi All,

I have a 35 gallon tank and was wanting to get some silver sharks (bala) as my next addition in the fish tank. Looking at a few peoples comments some say that this is far too small is this true? I appreciate that they grow very large eventually but have heard people using smalling tanks and they are fine.

Also another option if i wasnt going to go for the bala sharks is possibly the black molly which I also like the look off. I know these are brackish fish but does that mean salt is essential. I went in to a tropical fish store and they said it would be helpfull but not essential - does that mean that the fish wouldnt be in an ideal environment without the edition of salt?

Unfortunately the Bala Shark is far to small for the tank that you have. The absolute minimum tank would be 75g but larger would be better 100g+ as they could grow upward of 15 inches.

A lot of people keep mollies on a normal community tank without the addition of salt and they do well, they can live in both brackish and freshwater environments.

Definitely no balas. They're tank busters.

Mollies should be fine w/o salt, especially if you have hard water.

Have you taken Cycling the tank into account yet?

Do you know what cycling means?

Yes I have followed the guide for Cycling that was posted and have had my fish tank for around 8 weeks now.

I regularly test my water and at the moment the fish seem fine.

I already have 4 platies which are amazing but was just wanting a couple more.

Clearly buying Bala sharks wouldnt be fair on them so will stay clear of them - such a shame though as they are amazing to look at.

Okay, glad to hear you had a successful cycle!
