Hi i set up my Rio 125 on monday night, for the last day or so i have had the whole thing runing to remove the small dust particles.

Last night i added bactinettes to the filter and ammonia to the water to get it to 5ppm.

This morning ammonia was at 2.5ppm, did nt test for nitrite.

Am hoping when i get home ammonia 0 and nitrite showing,

Seems to be coming alone nicely.

To be honest Daniel, I wouldn't even bother checking for your Nitrite level until you can get 4 to 5ppm of ammonia down to zero within 12 hours. The bacteria that feeds on the Nitrite takes longer to develop.

Once you get the ammonia down in this timescale then keep feeding in the ammonia between 3 to 4ppm until the Nitrite levels drop over night as you will find you will get a Nitrite spike that will shoot off the chart.

I see, not too sure about that to be honest, as I didn't use any aids like that. I think that surely you should get something even if it decreases much quicker as your ammonia hasn't fully developed yet. This means that the byproduct of the Ammonia bacteria 'Nitrite' won't be present yet. So when the ammonia bacteria is fully established as I believe it can double within 24 hours that's when you usually get your spike.

If I'm wrong here please someone corect me, this is just the way things went with me that's all.
