pm'd you

mmmm great looking tank jimbooo definatly a bargain, you basically got it for the price of the filter!!!

But when you get bored breeding fish you can always do this, i think this tank is a 24x24 cube, i always thought the larger square shape has great potiential for planted setups, particularily the 24x24 an ideal size.

ha ha, not a chance.... at least not this year anyway, 4 hours of pruning and water changing every weekend is enough thanks..

i did see the potential though. the tank came with 2 x 18" tubes (15W), the tank has a waterproof cover glass under the wooden lid which the tubes sit on. i could easily fit 10 tubes in there.

Stop it... no i'm leaving it as a fish tank, may add some java fern thats about it. and er some anubias.

yeah i know... if i didn't have the other two to look after i'd give it some serious consideration....

3 fully planted tanks. a 50g, 40g and 12g is a bit over kill for a one bedroom flat.

oh dear i seem to have contracted MTS AGAIN!!!

i've always wanted a tank with bigger "feature fish" and no tiddlers. a pair of upside down cats is on the cards as well.

oh yeah i just popped to the LFS in my lunch break (as you do :*) ) some bloke brought in two 2 foot silver arrowas (SP?) 4 silver dollars and 4 foot long sailfin plecs. ha ha i've never seen the guys run about so fast moving every fish out of their 100G to squeeze the arrowas in... the customer didn't call ahead either, just turned up with all the fish in bags and plonked them on the counter.. some people hey... if anyones interested the arrowas are going for £50 or there abouts. pm me for the LFS name if you want them.

anyway i digress i may help them out with the silver dollars well 2 of them anyway... plants just wont work with those lawnmowers in the tank. java fern/anubias only for me (thank god)

haha im thinking that your forcibly getting urself more silver dollars so you dont have a choice but to go unplanted :p hehehehehe nice idea! :)

yep, you got it. i dont trust myself.

i chuck out so many cuttings every week i may throw something in there to see what happens but hardwear is staying as is this time around.

 it was hard enough convincing the other half to get the tank as it is let alone spending a few hundred more on upgrading the hardwear. i have noticed the 4 spare 18" tubes in the cupboard though

ok Zig. you win.

you were a little out on the 3 months though - 2 days it took of staring at the big bare glass panes front and back, hmm a vallis curtain would look nice in there..... and er some nice ludwiga.

wow i think to myself, i could fit a HUGE amazon sword in that corner and wouldn't the wood look nice with some anubias and java fern strapped on. oh yes i can see it now... and after all the silver dollars are pretty skittish in the bare tank, they really need somewhere to hide... oh yes and the bristlenoses are much more likely to breed in a well planted tank.

then the misses comes home from work. "when are you going to sort out the 'poor relation' then Mr, come on. you've shown me how a fish tank can look more than a kiddies toy with the other two when are you going to put the plants in?"

needless to say a twin ballast, substrate heater, black sand, laterite, some kind of massive diy co2 contraption and a step ladder are on the shopping list for this weekend......... damn it.

Hahahaha..........told ya......... :D

Well that didnt take long, I knew that picture would work :D believe it or not that tank came 2nd at ADA a few years ago, i always really liked it, i thought i had another shot of it from side on, ill try and dig it up, it looks excellent.

Its the way to go that tank is screaming out to be planted, its a beauty of a tank, im surprised more people dont use bigger type cube tanks, alls i can say is fair play to your girlfriend, thats women for you, rocks of common sense.

Definatly going to look foreward to the pics on this one, good little challange, if you get it right, which im sure it will, it will look amazing, i think you could start a trend around here for cubes.

Anyway great decision, really looking foreward to seeing it done, when i look at tanks now without plants, i just think, how boring, personally ill never have another tank again without plants in it, you could always go for a low light setup with no co2, less water changes etc, to keep the maintainence down, and it could still look great.

What way are you thinking of going, low medium or highlight, with or without co2.

ha ha, thank for the support zig.

not totally decided on the hardwear. i'm trying to find a cheap twin ballast to add to the existing one that came with the tank (no brand name on it so dont know where it came from). that'll give me 4 15w tubes so still only 1/1.5wpg (the wood will take up 10G or so when it's in.

i'm not going to plant any carpeting plants as i think it's too deep without some serious lighting in there.

also co2, i'd need 3 nutrafins. to get anywhere close to 30ppm. i really dont fancy changing 6 nutrafin canisters every week so may just plant slow growers to start with.

i could do with a second opinion so while were on the subject what do you think

vallis curtain at the back
bogwood in front with anubias and java fern strapped on
one big sword in there somwehere as well.

do you think they'd grow in a tank with the above lighting, laterite/black gravel and liquid ferts? no co2

cant quite decide myself. also will my silver dollars rip it all to shreds??

Hi Jimbooo,

I think you could make a _really_ effective design using purely wood and anubias. There are all different sizes of anubias and I think its a lovely plant, if a little expensive.

If you look at the website george posted http://www.naturacquario.net/amano/
look at number 2, pic 5, I know its not the final design, but I think that looks rather good (ignoring the carpet plants). Also it'd work well in your shape tank. What do you think?

Alternatively you could join the pressurized CO2 gang :D You know you want too...Xmas isnt far away now :D
