I'm having some weird results with my latest tank a 14 Hex. I had a 30L for years with no problems. The tank has been up for about a week, great clean washing gravel, AquaClear mini (rated 5-20 gallons) filter, a thouroughly soaked piece of aquarium-safe driftwood. The tank has received Cycle on a daily basis to kickstart the bacteria, and has had excellent test strip results from day 1. Temperature is right on the dot at 79 F with a Visitherm Stealth. Everything seems perfect... Using an ammonia reducing insert in the AquaClear at the moment, was planning to switch it over to carbon on the 15th. Just got my first batch of fish yesterday, 2 big, active looking mollies, a black one and spotted one. The black one was so excited he actually jumped out of the bag at the pet store, seemed like a good catch. Then I got 2 cardinal tetras who were a little shy in the bag. Once in the tank the tetras seemed right at home and adapted quickly, but the mollies are having difficulty adjusting. I almost thought the black one was dead last night, he tends to just lay towards the bottom or in odd places and barely move, the spotted one seemed ok at first but now is starting to exhibit similar symptoms. What's going on here? The tetras seem fine, my test strips look great, and the temperature is dead on. What have I done wrong? Also, a question about oxygen, is the filter alone providing an adequate source of oxygen? I had used live plants in my 30L, but didn't want the hassle in a 14 hex. Could there be a lack of oxygen? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Not weird results at all. Exactly what I would expect.

I suggest you buy a book (or visit some websites) about keeping fish - specifically about the requirements of your fish, or any more you intend to get.

Tetras live in shoals in soft freshwater - mollies like harder water - preferably brackish. Probably the most basic fish information out there

Just because they don't die immediately they are put in the same tank, certainly doesn't mean they will thrive.

Find out what water you have, find out what fish are at home in (NOT JUST TOLERATE) that water and get them. If the mollies in the shop had salt added, thy will have suffered osmotic shock when put in your unsalted tank.

If you do salt the tank, the tetras probably won't like it
