Most common snails in aquaria (most info from my personal experience of keeping them):
Pond snails - Hermaphrodites (have both male and female sex organs so can self fertile their eggs) lay eggs on the side of glass and surface of water normally and look like jelly approx 10mm in length and 5mm wide, look closely and you can see the pinhead size babies developing. Pond snails eat mainly algae but they also eat some plants. Weak shell, rarely dig and grow to 7 cm if allowed but often die before then. They are introduced through eggs laying dormant on plants then the water revives them.
Ramshorns - Hermaphrodites which lay their eggs normally in clumps rather then all at once on the side of the glass and plants able to support their weight (virtually all plants). Eat mainly algae but can eat certain aquarium plants. Weak shell in the shape of a horn, rarely dig, most common grow to 1cm if allowed. They are introduced through eggs laying dormant on plants then the water revives them.
Malaysian trumpet snails - Hermaphrodites and live bearers. Eat the detitrus in the sand which also turns it releasing any gas pockets. Strong shell in the shape of a spiral, Door on the shell to prevent predators from sucking them out, often dig, they can live in the substrate for all their lives without you ever noticing them. Largest I have had emerged yesterday and is 3cm long they darken as they age.
Apple snails - Have male and female separate sexes which lay eggs in clutches above the water line in the humid are. Most species are prolific herbivores and will prefer live plants over algae except those of the species bridgesi which are mainly algae and dead plant matter eaters. Strong shell with a door to prevent predators, rarely dig, can live out of water for a couple of weeks so egg clutches thrown in the bin might come back to haunt you. Get to 7 cm in height.
Nerite snails - Have male and female seperate sexes lay their eggs in brackish water so not a worry for FW aquariums. Prolific algae eaters. Strong shell some such as the horned have defences on the shell, rarely dig, some can live out of water for a couple of days but not for very long. Get to 2..5 cm in size
Assassin snails - Have male and female seperate sexes which lay their eggs on strong stemmed plants. Snail killers mainly pond and ramshorns due to there lack of defences, will only contain a population normally not eradicate, they will eat 1-3 snails (depending on size of prey) per day then rest for 1-2 days. Strong shell, Like to dig, no defences. Get to 3cms in size.

hermaphrodites can NOT self fertilize...its just that if you have two hermaphrodites together they just swap sperm packets. and snails can carry sperm for a while so even if you get one snail, could still lay eggs.

What snails do you think I have in my old tank?
