I currently have a 10 gal tank that has been up and running for about 2 months. I have since bought a 95g tank and will be installing this soon. The question i want to ask is, to prepare for the transfer should i install one of the external filters into my current tank so that it has a chance to build up some of the bacteria. If this will work, how long will it take for the bacteria to grow on my filter and will i then be able to just transfer all my fish (4 platys and 5 guppies) straight into my new tank with the filter? Cheers for any help guys, much appreciated.

Just take the media from the filter currently running on the 10, bung it all in the new one and transfer the fish straight away :) they may get lost in a 95 though :p ha.

Enjoy.

The one i have at the minute is an internal one, shall i just take the media out of this and put it in one of the trays of one of my externals then? Will it be sufficient even though the bacteria on my urrent tank are only used to a 10g and will be going upto a 95g? Sorry for the stupid questions just want to get it right

Thats right :) just put it in with the biological media in the new filter, beneficial bacteria can double within 24 hours so within a week all the new media will house it :) (Provided theres enough food, which will be introduced with the addition of more fish)...So no worries, a few small fish in 95g of water will create very little waist as it is so its no real gamble.
