Hi everyone,

This is in part an introduction since I am new to this forum and the fish keeping hobby.

I have recently setup a Juwel Rekord 700 tank with several rocks, a piece of driftwood and fairly heavily planted. Still with plenty of open swimming space. The tank is 70 litres, which I believe equates to approximately 15 gallons, whilst I would have loved to purchase a larger tank, I unfortunately live in a one bedroom flat so space is limited.

I did as much research as I could prior to purchasing and setting up this tank as well as on breeds of fish and care. I also made sure that I did a fishless cycle prior to adding any fish.

Unfortunately I was poorly advised from my lfs when purchasing my initial fish and went with 2 male dwarf gourami (one blue, one red). Despite my research I did not encounter anything stating that this is not recommended at the time as they will fight.

As of yet the fish have been very active and seem happy enough. They have both taken to their own sides of the tank, both of which provide substantial plant life and shelter, and they both actively participate in feeding. Occassionally one will chase the other if it strays too far across and a few small comotions take place, although nothing in my opinion that would seem to be of huge concern. This occurs fairly regularly although they are not in any way constantly fighting.

My question therefore is whether it will be ok to keep these fish in this setup or would this be ill advised? If possible I would love to avoid returning either fish as they are both my favourites and really beautiful examples.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, apologise that this post is so long but many thanks for taking the time to read.

:hi: to the forum

I kept 2 male dwarf gouramis in a 60L with no major problems if you keep an eye on them i would think they will be fine :good:
i found putting a line of tall plants down the middle stopped them from chasing each other as much.

What other fish are you planning on stocking?

Hi,

Many thanks for the prompt response, thats great news as I love both these fish and would hate to have to choose one. I will keep a close eye on them though.

I am looking at possible getting some Five Banded Barbs, perhaps 5 or 6 as in my opinion these are a great looking shoaling fish.

I would also like some bottom feeders and am currently considering zebra loaches, 3 to be precise.

Does anyone have any experience in keeping either of these fish types and if so any advice?

The five banded barbs may bit slightly to active for a 70L but it is posable.
I think that the loaches would to fine in there and are very nice fish :good: ive never kept either species so im not an expert :p

Good stuff, I will definitely get the loaches then. Of the two they were my main concern for space. Will do a bit more research into the barbs.

Whats the general recommendation with bottom feeders, if I were to purchase three loaches could I also add a catfish?

Very sorry for all the questions by the way, you have been a great help so far. Last one I promise  I am working on the rule of 1inch of fish per gallon, however, I have done alot of reading that states with modern bio filters this rule can be a bit more slack and (within reason) more fish can be introduced to a setup? I'm sure this is probably a cause of many debates, just wondering peoples opinions?

Hi i probably wouldn't add any cat fish TBH, they can be territorial.
I always like the idea of keeping fish from similar regions and all the fish you are planning on are a from asia so i would stick with asian fish (but thats just me)

As long as you have a big enough filter and keep up water changes you can stock anything (within reason)

ok no problem I will avoid adding catfish.

Are you able to advise any other fish types from Asia, like you say it would be nice to keep a community from the same region?

Ya, I would either do loaches or cats but not both as you don't have the real estate. Also, may want to look into getting sand for your substrate as the loaches and cats would both appreciate it more.
