Hi there

Currently Have a community tank with varied species of Plecs, Tetras, Barbs, Mollys and Danios as a found this to be a great starting point, Now though I am wanting to move in a different direction with the tank.

The tank itself is a 330 litre 75 Gallon planted tank with sand substrate and T5 Lighting (2 x 38 watts, and a 3rd 38 watt red T5 light, all independantly controlled).

I like oscars however they need a large amount of space and I am aware they can be quite desruptive to the tank layout.

I was thinking s cichlid tank focussing on Yellow Labs and Pseudotropheus Demasoni. Would these two mix well in the same tank? im aware that the pseudos require cave hiding places so will need to incorprate that into the new set up. I would like to keep the tank simple to a couple of species rather that 7-8 like i do now.

Also would a tiger barbs work with these cichlids?

Thanks

The demasoni is highly aggressive and shouldn`t really be kept with lower aggressive, sociable fish such as the labs

Oh really? in the PFK post it stated it was fine to keep Psu.Tro with Yellow labs? :/ confused

If you want to keep a species only tank then the demasoni would be fine, even then you need to be looking at keeping a minimum of approx 10 of them, a larger number reduces aggression.

The demasoni is definitely not a beginners fish, it`s a fish that needs to be kept by someone experienced in the mbuna setups, I`ve had malawi/mbuna for a few months now and I personally wouldn`t consider keeping the demasoni.

There are many other species of mbuna that would co-exist with yellow labs with no problems at all i.e elongatus mpanga, cynotilapia afra, ndumbi red top, socolofi. Have a good read of other forums and articles related to mbuna and you`ll get some idea of the requirements and compatibilities.
