Right guys. I am purchasing this beauty of a tank

http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk/php/popup_lg.php?mypic=209362.jpg

Its going to be home to my only 2 fish at the moment a pair of red tiger oscars. They are from the same brood so i dont think that theyll ever mate but im just wondering what you guys maybe think to adding either synodontis catfish, black lancer catfish and maybe a red severum to the mix.

Let me know what you think guys. Tank is 430L

Your new tank looks great. I'll let others comment on tank mates but not certain why you are so sure siblings won't mate? They will if they are opposite sex. Don't follow the same laws as humans...... usually do.

It looks like a really nice tank, but is not what I would ideally choose for large cichlids, as it is very short back to front. It looks somewhere about 14-16" in that dimension. A really, really large oscar will even struggle for room to turn round. Even if they can turn round, large cichlids far prefer a bigger footprint, so the height of the tank is far less important than the depth (front to back). A 4' x 2' footprint is the minimum I would buy for a pair of oscars.

Also, even though they are from the same batch, there will be nothing to stop a male and female pairing up and spawning. They don't have the same moral guidelines as us.

i totally agree , its a nice looking tank but im not sure id want 2 adult O's in it .

Yea I can Understand what your saying guys totally but this is what I have :)

What I meant about siblings is that I thought If they were from the same brood that they would be the same sex. Ah well :)

Can anyone suggest some bottom dwellers for tank mates at least? Maybe syno cats?

seems like your only listening to yourself mate

Well seems this place has changed, used to be people would offer ideas and such without any sarcasm or malice. Well thanks everyone for their time I guess I shall seek advice from other Oscar keepers :)

I'm no oscar keeper but have seen a far few posts on them. At 18" deep I think the tank will still be a little too shallow for a fully grown oscar and definitely for 2, I think most people keeping oscars do so in 2 ft deep tanks....I think your responses were interpreted as you not accepting this premise. You are some way off full adult size though, if oscars are like other cichilds they get to 2/3rds full size fairly quickly but that last third will take quite some time...maybe you could upsize again later on?

A brood consists of male and females and they will mate as they get older and fancy it...seem it with my cichlids. It's worth trying to sex the pair to know what you're in for.

As for catfish if you go with syno's or similar you should be okay, but it's worth getting info from others that have done it, not sure about adding a sev though....might work or might end in tears
