Hello everyone,

I'm to to the forum and have now been into African Cichlids for 12 months :fun:

My new 6x1x2foot tank arrives in 2 days and I really want to make a good go of it. I’m going to start it with every thing new so I will need to cycle it.

my current tank is a 3x1x2 foot and its sad to say its been slowly neglected over time in regards to the decor I use only live plants which I restock every couple of months and have drift wood, jug and barrel for the fish to hide in.

My question is dose anyone have any good Ideas for the tank. Decor/Fish ect. I like lots of colour and thing you don’t see in very tank. I REALY want to make a good go of this tank and want all my guests to go ooooooooooooo.

My current stock is below I will be getting another clown loach and silver shark hopefully female if the guys I have are male

note only thing brought for the Decor is gravel was going to go sand but backed away from the idea

All ideas are most welcome & very much

1x electric yellow (1 inch)
1x Clown Loach(2 inch)
1x Lombardi (1.5 inch)
1x silver shark (3 inch)
1x plecto (1/2 inch)
1x Melanochromis (1 inch)
1x zebrathingy (2 inch) ( White body black strips and red belly) maybe Astatilapia Latifasciata
1x venustus (3 inch long)
1x blue yellow thingy(2.5 inch) blue body yellow fins with black strips could be Oto Lithobates Sulphur

The only three things I know about off that list are the clown loaches, sharks and pleco.

There are hundreds of different types of pleco, mostly they have L numbers to identify them (for instance I've got an L15.) You want to find out what type of plec it is before you buy it.

Clown loaches get massive - not an issue for your tank, granted, but they will grow in excess of 12 inches. They need to be kept in groups of 5+ ideally and are incredibly active - they don't always mix well with fish that are easily startled.
Same for silver sharks - they grow in excess of 12 inches and need to be kept in groups of at least 3, ideally 5 or more. They are very skittish.

As for the others - if you don't know what they are, don't buy them is my advice. Two similar species from the same genus can be extremely different (as I'm sure you know) so its not worth chancing if you're not sure imo.

I'm not suggesting the rest of your list is fine - I don't know enough about any of the others to comment. Make sure you get a response from someone else on here though to be on the safe side. Might be worth sticking a post in Tropical Discussion to get quicker answers.

Good luck.

I don't think i'll comment on this one much as I believe "Malawi's are good with Malawi's" and not as a community fish. They are mostly too aggressive to be with other species. And I like to keep a mostly natural habitat, which is rocks for the Malawi's. Good Luck :)

Hi

Thankyou for the reply’s

I believe I have a Gold Nugget Pleco. I know they are semi aggressive but this guy is the gentlest pleco I’ve seen.

I know so of the guys listed above be big. I have a plan in place to future proof this problem.

Also I know most Malawi's can be aggressive but these guys have been together for a long time and get alone quite well The biggest guy I had when I setup the tank was the venustus only 1/2 inch long.

The 12 months I have had the tank setup I have only had to episodes in relation to aggretion

My post is really about what other fish I can put in the tank and what I can do about the Decor I am now after a Malawi's natural look.

Regards,
BoneZ
