Hi everyone!

I just got a new 5.5 gallon tank and a 25W heater.

I wasn't sure how to introduce my little betta into the tank with the heater considering the temperature would be increasing.

Also, I got a thermometer and it says it is 27 degrees celsius (82 F) though it's just the water I put in without the heater or anything. It might not be a very reliable thermometer for all I know. I hope it becomes more accurate...

anywho, any suggestions? I was thinking of just putting him in the water (in his cup) and let him sit there while the temperature increases with the heater on so he can get used to it as well. Or would it be okay to put him in first and then turn on the heater?

Turn the heater on and leave it for a few minutes, then put your betta in his cup or a bag, and float him inside that in the water for 20 mins or so to allow him to get used to it, then let him out.

Don't forget to make sure your filter is fully cycled ,and you have lots of hiding places for him :good:

Wait till water gets right temp... this shouldnt take this long... day at the most... keep feeling it with the back of your hand to see if its ur thermometer is lieing or not etc.

Make sure your tank is cycled if not put some media in so you could add the fish asap...

The best way to add a fish is when you get him from LFs you get him in a bag. Let that float for about 5 mins and let the fish settled to the tanks temp etc... Then let him out the bag to settle down in the main tank etc...

This all sounds great! Thanks for the tips! I'll be sure to do them!

Thanks again! =)

No problem , Hope this helps. We always get our fish in bags for transport etc... We keep them in bag for 5 mins, then open top of bag... Then add a little of bag water to his tank and a bit of tank water to his bag (About a small cup full - teat cup etc) and then after another 5 mins let him in... He should be no more than 15 mins :)

Remember to post pics when you get him and when he settles down

it really is not good practice to add the store water to your tank water. if the store does in fact have a disease outbreak in their system somwhere( they usually use open systems feeding to more than one tank) than you are risking introducing this into your tank. instead, float the bag for around 10 min to match the temp with your tank temp. then add ONLY your water to the bag, little by little (a cup or so at a time) waiting for ten min between additions. then either net the fish in the bag(sometimes difficult to do) or pour the bag into the net over a bucket or other large receptacle (not the sink...many folks have lost fish down the drain this way) and add the fish to your tank.
again, you should not be adding store water to your tank! you might get away with it time and time again, but all it takes is one bad nasty to wipe out your tank.
cheers.
