i have ammonia and its against the law to post it best bet is to go into a air con and refrigeration company and ask for some they might say yes

cheers dane

if you had posted this last week i would have dropped it of for you was working in your gorious town

ps theres loads of air con in scotland maybe cos most of them heat :hyper:

cheers dane

they sell it in homebase. they also do sell it in boots as i have seen it, although the last time i went to boots for some the shelf said "ask behind medecine counter" so i went and asked the woman there and she said "sorry we dont sell that here" so i said "but i just saw it and the shelf and it says ask here" so she says "yes, it's out of stock"
so dont take one womans word for it that the dont sell it

ammonia is really nasty stuff and can kill you i know this a i work with it alot so i doubt you can buy proper amonnia of the shelf

its usually diluted with water with about 9 or 10% ammonia, boots DO sell it, in a 500ml bottle iirc

obviously it's not pure ammonia, it's 9% ammonia solution, used for household cleaning

theres really no need to use pure ammonia, especially if you cant buy the damn stuff, just use prawns.

I have cycled many tanks very successfully this way, geez, never felt the need to go out and buy ammonia!!!

Its very easy to cycle a tank/filter, i reckon i could do it on algae tablets if i needed to :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

EDIT: and i mean PROPER cycle with prawns, i have done it before on different size tanks and then stocked heavily from day one with no ammonia readings or nitrite and testing daily for 2-3 weeks, and none of this adding ammonia every day stuff or every few days business, put the prawns in, let the ammonia peak to the max (over 8mg/l), take prawns out, wait 10-21 days (depends on readings) let nitrite max out, ammonia and nitrite then hit ZERO, bobs ya Uncle, fanny's ya Aunt, job done, its a good'un, just be sure to top up the "ammonia source" when nitrite begins to drop to a low level, then nitrite gets to ZERO after that, the fish go in.

makes me laugh all this adding actual ammonia when you can just nip down Tesco!!! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

forget boots and head down to Tesco's or Asda

As for the filter, it can function anywhere as long as water is passing through it, but ideal position is at top of tank, so the "flow" is coming out just below water surface, depending on how much water flow and oxygen creating you want in tank, it also depends on "noise", experiment with it and you will see what i mean.

And get your kid some decent pants if you gonna put him on the internet, white is so last year

:hyper:

Hi Zoe,

She gave you a funny look because ammonia is very dangerous stuff. Its used for making bombs and drugs, so its not really widely available. Even the shops who do stock it seem almost reluctant to sell it.

Put your filter at the top of the tank. The most important thing is to create surface movement in the water. This is essential for oxygenating the water.

As Frylover says, ammonia is not essential. I cycled my filter with frozen squid. Ammonia is best though IMO, it cuts out the middle man. ie why use prawns or squid to create ammonia, if you can just use ammonia? I used squid because i couldn't find ammonia. Hope that makes sense.

Hope you are well. :good:

edit: forgot to say, your tank looks good! :good:
