hi my swortail gave birth 2 days ago! :D i moved them to another tank. but with no fiter because when i truend it on 3 died. :-( so anyways i have 10 babies. :). so back on topic how do i tell if my other swordtail is going to give birth shes fat. but the only problem is that shes black so i cant tell if the gravid spot is there. she looks almost like a square  how do i tell if shes pregnant or just over feed. if she is pregnant how do i know when to move her. whith my last batch of fry i saved them from my display tank. she kind hangs out in the bush and only eats.

Congrats on the kiddos. :)

There are some signs of giving birth, like eating more/less, hoovering in one spot, hiding, etc, but it really depends on your fish. Just be on the lookout, and you'll get to know her signs of labor.

She's probably pregnant. They usually are. If you have a male in the tank, she's definitely pregnant.

Where would you be moving her to? If it's a breeder trap or net, don't. It's stressful for them. If it's a fry tank, depending on how big it is, you could probably move her in soon. Then block out about a month from when she gives birth, and move her in a little before then next time. Keep in mind some have fry in less than a month, so you may miss them the first few times. Nothing is guaranteed with fish. But you'll get to know her and her birthing patterns.

Good luck! :good:

Megafish18 it took me a while and a bit of pregnancy and births to realize that my swordtail gave me fry every month and some times 5 weeks. But by learning how to know your female swordtails better you will be more likely to save many more fry in the future. I have 61 fry. They are guppies and swordtail fry in a 10 gallon tank. For the tank that has your fry you should buy a sponge filter(wont kill your fry). They are very cheap. All they need is an air pump and airline tubing. Well good luck with your fry. In a year or so you can easily have a few generations of fry. I have been into breeding for about 9 months and have 3rd generation fry. With a lot of hard work you can have many fry. :good:

i have a bubbler/ fliter but is for under gravel what if i did 20% water changes everyday?

That could work. It's not as good as a filter, but I guess if you have to. Also, there is a cheap DIY sponge filter you can make. There is a pinned topic in DIY.

Do you have a heater?

Well excuuuse me.

Not everyone has a heater. Some people have fish rooms they keep at certain temperatures, some people live in warm climates where they don't need a heater, not everyone realizes they need a heater, etc.

i chould have haf beter luck have you seen the post about my fry dying?
