hi everyone

very new to this hobby so would like some advice

had tank up and running for nearly 2 months now (fluval 90 roma) just added some guppies 6 of 2 male and 4 female
all female seem to be pregnant hom do i know when they are about to give birth as 2 of them are very fat. should a breeding trap be used?

The dark spot on their abdomen gets really dark the closer they are to giving birth. I'm no livebearer expert, just something I picked up somewhere.

Sometimes livebearers will give birth shortly after being introduced to your tank. This is usually attributed to stress. They should give birth every 28 days (at least that is what I was told.)

thanks for quick reply

two are very black and very fat. the male is giving her grief should i put her in a trap?
also i have cherry barbs will they eat the fry?

Any fish will eat any other fish if it will fit in it's mouth. If you have lots of hiding places for the fry then some should survive. You can put her in a breeding trap. This will limit the stress put on her from the males.

Hi,
Yes, to be on the safe side, put the female in the breeding trap. You probably already know this, but be sure to cover the intake valve of the filter so none of the fry get sucked up into it. I wrapped netting from a brine shrimp net around mine. Right now I have a single little fry in my tank and he/she is about 1/3" long and my adult male guppies haven't tried to eat the baby. Then again, I've been giving them four small meals a rather than one large one so they may not be as "starving" as they normally are (constantly seeking out something to eat).

There is a really good post in the Live bearer post - it's one of the posts at the top; I think it's called "the stages of a guppy pregnancy".
