I have a 300l tank with external and internal filtration.

Would it be big enough to take only two of any of the following (ie only two fish in total) and how would they mix do you think?

Green terror
Green Texas Cichlid
Bocourti
Vieja fenestrata

Is it a better idea to buy several smaller fish and see how they get on as they grow and move them on when necessary rather than to get two larger fish say 8" and hope they settle?

How much decor should I put and what would be appropriate? What I had before worked but its all change now since my synspilum died. Any advice for a fresh start please? :good:

i like texas cichlids especially when they are mating as they go black to most of there body, they would look nice with 4/5 with some nice plants/wood and some slate but at the end of the day it your choice in what you are drawn to the most

Thats asking for carnage IMO, the GT and Texas will most probably kill each other, dont know much about the other two, but assuming they are aggressive cichlids too, you need a much larger tank to try it.

The Boccourti I have heard is meant to be more of a peaceful cichlid, not highly aggressive, but they are big fish, mainly orangey colours. Vieja also get big, think the smallest is V.Regani. In a 65ish gallon tank, which is prob about 4 foot long? I would suggest keeping one of the fish you've mentioned or possibly a pair of GT's. Just my opinion and what i've read.

A pair of one of the species you mention would be ok. GT's are South American, whilst the others are Centrals needing differing water parameters. Bocourti are either peaceful or aggressive, depending on individual fish, Texas as in Herichthys cyanoguttatus are rarely available in the UK. So you probably mean Herichthys carpinte which are slightly smaller and would do fine in a tank of your size. If you decide to go with any of the Vieja species, beware of hybrids as they crop up more regular than the real thing if you see what I mean.

Hi guys thanks to all who have replied so far. Will take on what you've said.

I have experience keeping one large cichlid in a community tank but not two together so it's all relevant, thank you. And yes I do agree that whether a fish is aggressive or not can be just down to it's personality (fishonality?!) rather than just the species.

Any other opinions/experiences in this area also very welcome please. :D

ok been doing my homework and I really like the look of the Sajica though I'm a bit disappointed that they're not a bit larger. On the plus side they can be kept with larger cichlids so I could keep a Bocourti perhaps with one of these. I've thought about it and though it would be a nicer display to have pairs of fish I really don't want any fry. Can I keep say two male sajica together? Am looking tentatively to upgrade to 5ft tank so if you guys know of one nearby (S. Wales) please see my add in exchanges and answer the thread there.

Hmmm...so much to think about... cooo!
