I have a 28litre unused tanks. I had it as a pico marine and am considering a betta tank with a few cherry shrimp and 5-6 neons and maybe an apple snail.

I've kept fish before (obviously) and had 3 bettas previously so no new info needed. What I want to know is the perfect set up for this tank? Also, what is the best way to give tank a thorough clean? Can you bleach it?

I may also consider white cloud mountain minnows instead of neons. how will the 2 fishes temperature needs work?

Thanks for all responses

I personally would say you can clean the tank with whatever you like, as long as you rinse it with fresh water afterwards. Most people opt for vinegar and water for safety reasons.

Seriously fish offer some of the best fish profiles i've seen on the interwebs, best look there for temperature recommendations on the fish.

Well I know the minnows require a slightly lower temp than bettas. Will takin an average work for both? Or will the minnows do ok at a higher temp as I know they are hardy?

Also with regards to snail. I was aware of that problem so is there any suggestion to something less risky that could be added to help clean up?

The average temp should work as long as you are not too many degrees out either way. 1/2 woudl be acceptable, 3/5 would not. (in my opinion) A tank of 28 litres will only take all of 5 minutes of your time to clean up spotless once every few months, no point adding anything to do the job for you and whatever you do add, wont do as good a job as you will.

In a 28l, there isn't room for much else other than the Betta. Perhaps 2-3 male Endlers?

I have a 34l, with a Betta, who thought that Cherry Shrimp were lunch. This tank now has Amano Shrimp.

do you mean white cloud minnows or zebra danios?

If considering either of these then I'm afraid your tank is not big enough. They are very active swimmers and need a 3ft tank minimum.

The original post mentioned WCMM.

Ok I will have to consider this.

Cherry shrimps are likely to breed so wht would the maximum amount I should think about before taking some out and giving them to my lfs

Clean it with bleach. Rinse it VERY well. When you can't smell the bleach anymore in your tank its okay to add your gravel, filter, etc etc.

I got that tip in a book. :)
