I got a couple of little white SD girlies! The lady who sent them to me said she'd put a runt of the spawn in for me too - she wasn't kidding! The runt is seriously a third of the size of the bigger girl. I had to do a bit of quick DIY with a soldering iron and a soft drink bottle to get her in the tank.

The only reason I have her in the bottle is because my other girl Bertha is quite big. She'll flare and show others who's boss, but I've never seen her be nasty or overly aggressive to other fish. Should I take the little runt out of the bottle and let her swim free in the tank, or should I get her her own bowl?

She won't let me get a good photo

So cute

Well I went ahead and let Fishbones out of the bottle. She seems to be doing okay, I just made sure she got her fair share of bloodworm at dinner by holding it right down in front of her nose. I got a better pic of Snowball II

Awww. The little one is veryyyy cute. :)

I wouldn't let her out of the bottle, personally.

In my experience, the larger one is not aggressive but just territorial for a few days.. and then suddenly you'll come back and find several splits in the small one's tail.

:look: :look: oh! quick! put her back in :good:

Purdy  Perhaps clip the biggest container you can find inside that tank, and feed the runt very, very well on nutrient rich foods. She should grow pretty quickly with plenty of space and a good diet.

What exactly is a runt, I know its small but is it like a midget, if it is I think my girl is a runt, I've had her for about 2 weeks and she hasnt really grown that much, shes bigger than that tiny little girlie but she wasnt much bigger than that when I got her.

I think runts are cute.. I know it's supposedly "bad" and it's brought about by bad things, but the small size is really cute.

I wonder, if, similar to giant bettas, one could breed tiny bettas. :p

While i've never bred, just through basic genetics it'd have to be possible, select smaller fish to breed, and from that offspring, select the smallest, working through that way.

If a runt is caused by competition for food, or some other factor (I don't know what it is with fish!) then it'd not be useful for breeding small fish, but, I imagine it'd be doable! Just a matter of distinguishing which fish are small due to genetics, and which are small because of outside influences.

Mini bettas sound cute. :D

I let Fishbones out because all her sister did while she was in the bottle was sit right outside it so she could see her sister. So far no worries at all, Snowball II is looking after Fishbones. I do have a spare tank and heater if things turn nasty, but I don't expect them to. My main concern was that my old girl Bertha would eat Fishbones she's that small. I tried to get a pic with her sister that shows her size, but they kept moving

This is Fishbones doing her impersonation of a tall person. She was also closer to the glass. She's actually about half the length of her sister

The flash is in the way in this one, but it shows the difference in girth

I just did the same thing for the feed this morning, we're having live foods and I'm shoving them right in front of her nose and holding them there until she eats. The other girls tend to stay away from her when my hand's in the way
