At first I thought these were Bolivian Rams.....now I'm starting think that they might be German Blues. I'm not exactly sure what they are or what sex they are.

Anybody have a clue?

Hi there,

Both are 'blue' rams > Mikrogeophagus ramirezi

From your photographs, looks like the ram in the 1st picture is the female and the ram in the 2nd picture is the male.

As far as sexing goes:
'Blue rams' can be sexed using a variety of characteristics. The males
are generally larger (most prominent in adults), have slightly longer
fins (dorsal) and lack the blue spangles in the black mid-lateral spot
found in the females. Wild fish are very easy to distingush, but the
cultured varieties may be a little harder, assuming both sexes are
present. If I were asked for one reliable difference, I would say the
blue spangles within the black mid-lateral blotch is the best method
(it
also works on young fish and the cultured varieties).
Always worked for me!!

they both look like male german rams to me... and not very happy IMO. the grey stripes on them should be black, they go pale, like in the pics, when stressed.
the females have a bit of pink on thier belly's, whereas the rams in your pic only seem to have yellow on them. again this could be because they are stressed and wont show their colours when unhappy.

this was one of my female rams

They were definitely stressed as they had only been in the tank for a few hours at that point. This here is another pic of the one that I'm sure is a female. The only way I can attempt to figure the sex of the other fish by the length of the anal fin. Since it stops right at the beginning of the tail (on both fish), I think they may btoh be females.
