Is it normal for a NEW PROTEIN SKIMMER to “break in”? It seems like whenever the white colored foam reaches to the top of the collection cup it is an excessive amount. I would say that at least a gallon of water comes out of it daily. That being said, I have to keep making salt water to re issue into the tank or a mass of white bubbles will invade my tank (due to not enough water in my sump). I have tried to adjust my new protein skimmer but nothing seems to work.

Correct me if I’m wrong but shouldn’t foam being coming out of the collection cup 24/7? (In small amounts?

Which protein skimmer do you have, is your tank a new set up?
Is the liquid in the cup a Brown/Green colour?

Most skimmers do take a while to 'bed in'. If your tank is new and cycling then the skimmer will be working hard and it will produce a lot :good:

Yes my tank is about 6 months new. The skimmer is about a week old also. Yeah there is nasty green/brown stuff being collected with about a gallon a day of water being thrown out aswell :(

if tis coming out that colour i would say its working well but abit too well with the amount it is collecting maybe it is to powerfull for the setup and it would suit a larger aquarium you may need to change the pump for a smaller one or buy a new one or is there some way to turn the flow down on it like a tap or valve from the pump also is it air fed too if so you might need to set that up to the speed of the water flow you may need more or less air i would go for less air by means of a valve but i maybe wrong on all this just try fiddling about with it and see what happens also how many litres is the tank and what make and model is it too please

but it maybe just that its just because its cycling and having to work super hard and catching lots of crap

Yes, a break in period is very common. Is that a downdraft type skimmer there?

no it's just a normal protein skimmer that my supplier sold me.

 Ski, think you may need to explain about the types of skimmer - I sure as hell can't ;)

If your skimmer is running too 'wet' try turning the amount of air being sucked in :good: Mine was doing the same a few days ago eeekkkk except mine ended up overflowing all over the floor
