Hey all,

When i Bought my 45Gallon tank i got a small 6~7gallon (think its about 10us gallons) Tank with it. I Set it up about a week after my big tank and it has 3 sissortails in it... I want to make this tank like a nursery tank for plants. Dunno if that sounds a little dumb? I have tried to grow things in my main tank but im failing real bad :( I managed to grow 3 types of plants, Vallis (tall grass like plant)

This Floating plant

Some of them are about 12" long now

This Colomba or something like that?

These grow in anything i was told and the guy at the lfs showed me how to get cuttings off the main plant so got about 15 of these now.

The Small tank i want to use has about an inch and a half of fine gravel, a large filter (way to big) that causes lots of current, dunno if thats a problem? And the lighting is well have a look,

It has a 40W bulb in it and its like an orangy colour not white.

I am looking to grow something interesting or something like small bush type plants? Anything off there as i will order some... http://www.java-plants.com/default.asp?page=plants
I was thinking about adding a home made CO2 Yeast bottle CO2 thingy but not 100% On that.
As far as i can see you have a bottle with a tube going in the lid and an air stone on the end of this. Not sure about how much sugar, yeast, bi-carbonate of soda and water to use but if i need to add CO2 im sure someone will give me a hand :)?

Any other info you would like met me know and ill try to let you all know.

You could always the ordinary energy saving CF bulbs over the 10 gallon with a 15 watt you should have some success and you may not need co2.

i was planning to make one of these too so i can make plants grow really fast. i think it was 2 cups of sugar to 1 teaspoon or tablespoon of yeast, i forgot. instead of using a airstone for the co2, make a diffusor.you wouldnt need a filter if its loaded with plants and has a few fish in it.

That's cabomba and it will grow tall and scraggly, if the lighting isn't to its liking. Then it will give up and die.

It looks like high pressure sodium lamp(HPS). I'm not sure if you can grow plants with that. On the plus side, it's very efficient; more efficient that fluorescent. The problem with HPS lamps are that it's a single spectrum. It's orange-yellow only; no green, no blue, no red. Just orange-yellow.

Well, you need to sort out your lighting first. Then we'll give you a hand. But if you're going to use the HPS, then you're on your own. I dont' think anyone has ever used HPS lamp for plants. Who knows, may be you might find something interesting.

Thanks for the replys, The lighting was my main worry :( What would you suggest putting in to light it?

Im not sure what a CF is?

Let me know what you all think :) cheers.

CF = Compact Flourescent

I've had great success using two of these bulbs in my old 10 gallon.

Even though they were 2700K, not the ideal kelvin rating for plants, since each of these bulbs are equal to 60 watts of incandescent lighting, my plants were doing well.

Good luck and hope this helps!
