I have a filter which I've been using for quite some time in my 23gal planted tank. A little reading on the net revealed that its just a biological filter, and provides almost no mechanical filtration. So I bought a new power filter that I'm using for mechinical filtration.

I obviously have the old filter running, as it contains all the bacteria, and I don't intend to stop using it.

So the power filter is serving only as a mechinical filter. In this case, should I keep the power filter running 24x7? Is the water current generated by the filter bad for the fish? or is it good for the fish? My fishes seem to be enjoying the current (especially the cories).

The filter is not really "overkill" as far as the power of the current is concerned. One corner of the tank has a very large current, while the remaining tank has quite a pleasant current.

Hi akudewan :)

Once you start a filter, you MUST keep it constantly running or the bacteria you are growing in it will begin to die.

Corys do like a little current as long as they can get away from it for awhile. As long as they have a cave or a planted area that breaks it up, they will be fine. Your other fish will have their own preferences which will depend on what their native environment was like. Fancy bred fish like bettas or guppies, with very long tails and fins, are most likely to be bothered by it if it is strong.

I suspect that overall, if the current is moving the surface water faster than your old filter did, it will benefit your fish by adding additional oxygen to the water. Given the hot climate you live in, this is a very good thing for them.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm keeping the filter on 24x7, even though I want it as a mechanical filter, I guess it will also become a biological filter whether I like it or not :)

The fish seem to be happy, the corner farthest from the filter has low current, and the fish can rest there if they get tired, There's also a big log of bogwood and a cave where they can get cover.

Thanks once again, and a happy new year to all
