Hey,

I have a 150 litre tank and I want to get a plea to help with the algae. The guy in the aquarium shop suggested that the ones in the shop would be too small and to look on some buy and sell sites. I have found one that is 12 inches...I am wondering will this be too big for my tank and if so what sort of size should i go for?

TIA

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Algae is caused by too much light or nutrients and not enough plants to use the light and nutrients.

Can you post pictures of the tank and algae so we can see what type of algae is causing the problem?

What sort of light is on the tank?
How long is the tank light on for?
How many watts are the globe/s?
What is the Kelvin (K rating) of the globes?
How old are the globes?

What are the tank dimensions (length x width x height)?

How often do you do water changes and gravel clean the substrate?

Have you checked the water quality for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and GH?
If yes, what are the results in numbers?

You are better off working out why there is an algae problem before adding fish to try and deal with it.

In an aquarium that is 3 foot long, I would not keep any catfish that grows bigger than 6 inches, and a 4 inch algae eater would be a better size. Do not get any fish that is 12 inches long. And do not add any fish until we have dealt with the algae issue.
