Fish Crazy
I added some new plants to my tank, Ludwigia Repens and Hygrophyla defformis in particular, and they are not doing so well after about a week. The leaves of the Hygrphyla and the stems on the Ludwigia seem to be rotting. I've pulled a lot of the plants that I bought out of the tank and I'm left with two stems of Ludwigia that looks like it might survive and the Hygrophyla I'm happy to say seems to be coming back. I didn't lose any whole plants of the Hygrophyla but many of the leaves disintegrated or broke off.
I had started using Excel before putting these plants in and my Anubias nana and bananna plant seemed to be doing really well. My crypt which I've had for a while was just chugging along. I even have some Vallisneria, which I know can be harmed by Excel, but I found that although it seemed like some of the leaves were "melting" all in all they were doing better than before showing lots of new growth. I do not overdose on the Excel.
I'm wondering if the Excel is harmful to the Hygrophyla or the Ludwigia. I'm going to stop using it for a week and see what happens.
I have some Florish Trace and some Plant Gro iron enriched. I add them both about once per week. Should I be adding anything else? Should I not be adding these fertz? I have a little bit of algae but nothing really problematic. Some of the Valisneria grows some algae on the leaves at the top of the tank and the Anubias and Crypt have some green spot algae on the leaves but it doesn't seem to be hurting them too much and I trim some leaves off from time to time if they seem to not be doing too well.
My current lighting is 50 watts over a 30 gallon tank for about 10 hours per day with a "noon" burst for about 3 hours of an additional 20 watts. I did have an algae problem previously when I ran the lights together for the entire lighting period.
Any advice?
