I've gotten a bit of information (nowhere near as much as I would have liked) from across the net, but I'd like to get some information here. My husband had gotten me a pair of these lovelies because I had said they were cute and I might want to get some if I thought I could handle their needs. I didn't even have time to make dinner before he came home and was floating the bag in the tank. (Foo! I had had plans for that tank too, no convict tank for me I suppouse.) They are lovely little babies.

Can I get a bit of info from people here on what their requirements are, I know they like hard water (tank is currently at about 8.1...will probably try to raise it to 8.5ish) and the temp is at 27Cel. I have natural gravel and lots of flat rocks. There were some bulbs trying to grow but I removed them to my 10 because I wasn't sure if they would be munched.

Do these fish want to be in pairs or trios or what? What are sutiable tankmates (if any)? and any other information would be dead useful.

Edit: Oops...*swats self* This needs to be in African Chiclids, huh? Guess I put it in the wrong place. Sorry!

Yup, African from Tanganyikan.

These buys are very nice fish that have a lot in common with convicts. Both are charming monogomous breeders that will kill anything in the tank with them when they spawn. The brichardi are better for your water anyway.

Brichardi are substrate/cave spawners, so the ideal setup will have sand substrate with rockwork to form a network of caves. PH 8.1 is fine and it's not worth the trouble of raising it (and keeping it raised). You can use limestone rocks or crushed coral in the filter to buffer the PH. Tempreture of 27 is adequate, if a little high.

Nope, it is definately either Neolamprologus pulcher (Kambwimba) or Neolamprologus pulcher (Kantalamba). They are still fairly young so they could develop to be one ot the either but they have that body shape and the 'ice blue' tips on their fins. I'm thinking they are probably Kantalamba though, they look more like them facially (The more pointed look instead of the rounder and mouth shape) and look exactly like the 'young adult' picture of them. Thanks so much for that link though, it really did help!

They're awfully adorable, only about one inch long...looks like I can put the plants back in the tank as these guys are meat-munchers. I guess I got the highly agressive fish that I had wanted, even if they weren't what I had planned for.
