Hi all just purchased new Fluval Roma 200, just in the process of setting up ready for adding tropical frehwater fish in a couple of weeks.
Might need some help soon as its been around 14 years since last tank.

cheers all, Steve.

Hi Steve and welcome!

I take it that you won't be fishless cycling your tank if you are going to be adding fish in a couple of weeks time?

That being the case, I would strongly recommend you try to get some mature filter media from someone to kick start your filter and thereby speed up the whole process with less chance of fish deaths - there are some members on here who may be in your area and able to donate some mature filter media, or perhaps you could ask at your LFS. Try posting a request on the forums, though.

I would also advise not to add too many fish in one go. Just a few at a time with a week or two gap between each new batch of additions to give the filter bacteria a chance to multiply.

You might find it useful to check on here with your fish choices before you purchase them, just in case they end up being incompatible (you can't rely solely on what you are told in the aquatic centres/pet shops).

Whilst you are buying your fish there are a few items that you will also need:

A liquid test kit (to check your aquarium water readings - very important when cycling the tank to ensure ammonia/nitrite levels are kept at zero)

Aquarium water conditioner

Sorry, need to rush off - Im sure others will be able to also offer advice.

Regards, Athena

Welcome back to the hobby. I usually do a fish in cycle. I know it's not the prefered method, but I've been doing things the way my uncle taught me 40 years ago. It's always worked for me and I very rarely lose a fish. Get some mature media and do lots of water changes the first few weeks. Add fish slowly and do not clean the filter. If you have any questions, just ask. Just remember to get a liquid test kit and keep the ammonia and nirtite as close to zero as possible.
