I just bought a nice piece of mopani from my LFS for my cycling 10g. I've boiled it for about 50mins or so, still lots of tanin seeping out, i'm going to leave it to soak overnight however... if there's still tanin in it when I put it in the tank (which there most likely will be) can I use ordinary BBQ charcoal in the filter?

If the discolouration isn't too bad I probably won't bother, but for future reference. Do I just put some in a little net bag, and put it inside the filter?

Thanks

No, dont use ordinary charcoal that wont work at all, get proper charcoal filter media from your LFS.

Tanins wont go easily with a bit of boiling and some charcoal, it requires lots of water changes and soaking.

You'll need to put it in the filter if you want it to be effective - this way large amounts of water are force through it. The more you use, the more effective it will be. In my experience Mopani can leach tanins for quite a while.
