Hi everyone! Just wanted to share some info about my new fish and ask a few simple questions.

I recently got a yellow bodied, white tummied, orange spotted fin lyretail molly. I don't know what gender it is, but I would like to know since I want to know if my mollies will start breeding again. The new molly's bottom fins are very thin and straight, not very rounded at all, but he/she chases the other molly around and sometimes the other molly chases him/her also. It was pretty calm in the store, but now its making sure everyone knows who's boss.

The little platy I *hope* is okay, the guy at the pet store, because he was so tiny, he fell onto the cart and the guy somehow had to pick him/her up and put him/her back in the water, so that was freaky.

Lemon Square (the new molly) is much calmer today and is happily swimming around, occasionally nipping at the guppies if they get too close. But, I would still like to know what gender he/she is so here are some pictures! The other molly (Bumble Bee) and Lemon Square are swimming close to each-other, now my mom can't think of splitting them up. (We were thinking about giving away Bumble Bee)

The baby platy (Minnie) is doing fine, swimming around skittishly but no sign of deformities. The other platy (Mickey) hasn't bonded yet with Minnie, so maybe it won't be like that this time.

Lemon Square the molly is most definitely male. Bumble Bee is female. For future reference, Female's have a traingular anal fin, Males... Well you get the idea, right? lol
If you only have two molliesand want to breed them, I'd get another female since the Male to Female ratio should be at least 2:1, preferably 3:1 F:M.
I'm not much of a Platy person but that one is sooo cute!!!

Alright, I'll let my mom know there may be babies coming soon. I don't care if they breed really, but I don't really want to be over-run by molly fry. :p I get your point about the genders, I just wanted to know since Lemon Squares is lyretail so it was kinda hard to tell.

I know right? We felt bad for him/her since it was in a tank next to the platies and it squeezed through the dividers. So we decided to get it. :D

Yeah, if you leave the baby mollies with mum and dad, mum may not eat them but dad will. Survival of the fittest.
I saw some lovely Hi-Fin platies in my LFS and was sooo tempted to get some but I them thought 'Wait... Where would they live?' because I don't have a tank for them... I have my male livebearers, guppies and mollies, in one tank and my females in another tank so that I can selectively breed them. I don't really want to add platies until I've established a good breeding between my current livebearers.

*facepalm*
I've made a mistake, Lemon Square is female... I've just taken a second look and noticed that the body shape is more feminine and the anal fin is triangular... Slap my wrist for this mistake.
If either have been in contact with a male in the last 6 months, they'll be pregnant though.

I feel for you, I want to get another male guppy but I shouldn't. I really would love to do what you have (a selective breeding program) someday if I ever have the time or money. :p

So, they are both female. Lemon Square is probably pregnant since she was in a tank with lots of other mollies of all (I think) genders.

It doesn't really take that much, you just need a tank for males and a tank for females. Then you pick which male you wany to breed with which female and separate them from the rest with a divider. It's all quite simple really.

Yes Lemon Square is female, in most LFS male and female are kept together so I think she may be pregnant but not very far gone.

I know, but my Mom doesn't really like even the idea of a new fish, so she probably will freak at the idea of a new tank. (unless I get a filter for my bowl and keep the males in there)

I'm hoping to get a 32" tank from the farm I sometimes volunteer at if my mum will let me... I'll be getting the tank, a filter, heater, Gravel, Ornaments and a pair of angelfish for free.
