Hi everyone got my tank up and running been running for a couple of weeks now what would people advise on keeping

Hello and welcome to the forum.

What fish you keep depends on what size tank you have. There are many, many fish to choose from. I believe its just a matter of what you like and what you don't.

Have you done a fish-less cycle?

yes no fish in the tank just gravel and plants

Ok, but what I mean is, did you build up the bacteria colonies in your tank? Did you use amonia or fish food to build this up?

Sorry if you have already done this but I'm just making sure.

been using fish food as thats what a friend said to do. hopefully thats right thing to do

That's grand, I've never done it that way but I know some who swear by it. Have you got a test kit so you know your filter is fully cycled?

yeah my boss came up with an electric test thing he put in the water to test it and said the water was pretty much spot on

What's this electric test? Never heard of it before, would be interesting to get the info on it. For your own peace of mind I would buy a liquid test kit.

What are your thoughts on stocking?

ok i'll get one today and test it.

really like pictus catfish and red tailed sharks but wasnt to sure if they could stay in the same tank or if they was the ideal fish to put in the tank first

It all really depends on what size your tank is. I'm pretty sure a pictus and red tail black shark will be ok but I'm no expert and you should get more advice on these two.

Stocking is a tricky subject. We've all seen a few fish we liked and bought them. Then a wee while longer into it and with the knowledge of more fish you start looking into different breeds. My suggestion would be to pick out a fish you really really want, then base the rest of your stock out from that.

There really is loads of possibilities. Please research fish before you buy them, come on here and get advised by people who will tell you the truth and are not wanting a quick sale.

got a 300 litre tank which i think is a pretty good size. think im deffo gonna go for the pictus catfish then like you say im gonna have a good read up on fish that can go in with them.
thank you ever so much for your help.

No problem. There are a lot of people on here only too willing to help with far greater knowledge that most at a LFS.

The pictus are nice, grow quite big too. Aye, a 300ltr is a good sized tank, bigger than what I had when I first started. :good:
