Hello. New member to the site from the east coast of Florida.
I've just set up my 4th tank over the last 25 years. Every time I set one up, I swear it's going to be a cichlid or saltwater tank and then I change my mind and wind up with another Oscar tank.
I've had a 90g and now three 75g tanks. The 90g had a Pacu and an Oscar and the rest have had a single Oscar. This one houses a baby (3-4") red tiger.
I'm running a pair of Marineland Emperor Pro 450 bio-wheel filters, a Tetra Whisper 300 air pump with two 4" round air stones, Hygger Led strip, and an Aqqa 500 watt heater.
My water comes out of the tap at around a 7.4 ph but for some reason within 24 hours of a water change, the tank stabilizes at 6.4. It may have something to do with that huge piece of Mopani wood in there...not sure. I haven't tested hardness.
The tank is fully cycled and the little guy seems happy.
I am entertaining the idea of adding a (similar-sized) tank mate but not another Oscar. I was thinking about a Flower Horn, a Severum, a Midas fish, or a Jack Dempsey. I've not raised any of these species before and I'm not sure how big they get or how they will interact.
I want to minimize fighting but also don't want to overload the filtration system by putting another fish in there that will grow to over 12" as an adult.
Interested to hear some opinions.

I would say that Flowerhorn and Midas are both not a really good idea for oscars mates.

A Severum of close matching size would be my choice.

Welcome to TFF!

I have had a fair amount of Oscars over the years, they are one of my favorite fish. In my experience, they are not all that aggressive, unless it's a very small fish that they are trying to eat. With other similar American Cichlids, it tends to be the Oscars that can get bullied. I've kept Oscars with Angels, Firemouths, Convicts, A jack Dempsey, and large plecos off the top of my head. Good luck!

I agree with you, That's why I suggested The severum...

Welcome to the site Spearhunter1. You do know that an Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a cichlid, right? :teacher:

@Fish Fan1
Why do you have large plecos on the top of your head? :fun:
I am aware. I should have been more clear when I referenced a cichlid tank, I have always been interested in having a tank full of the little colorful guys like haps, labs, mbunas, peacocks, etc...
Somehow I always wind up with another Oscar.

I think I'm going to try to find an electric blue Dempsey to put in the tank with him.

Alleged more peaceful than jack.

The fact is that an oscar has a superior mind and wont resolve to bestial violence when determent is only required... A quality, a lots of cichilds... Lack.

An older oscar will receive a new friend with caution... But they are so bright and curious... They will study the question before acting...

Most cichilds acts like maniacs and Putting a psycho with an oscar will prompt immediate resumption.

120 to 200 gallons would be an ethical size to do today... But, imo 75 is doable.

Understanding the reaction and acting fast... But a two boy buddies for life tank is easy to do.'

How old oscar is ?
