Hi,

I am a university student looking to get fish for the first time. I spend term times on the university campus but go home for christmas, easter and the summer holidays.
I really would like to get some tropical fish (tetras maybe?) this year, but I don't know if I will be able to.
I was considering using an automatic feeder for the two weeks over christmas and easter, but would probably take them home over the summer holidays (8 weeks). Would it be too stressful for the fish to be transported back to my house (approx. 3.5 hours)and then back again to the university campus at the end of summer?
I have read up on how to transport the fish, but any suggestions and advice would be much appreciated!!
Thanks!

I think they would be fine. People move fish around for fish shows and things like that. I think it would be relaxing for you to have the fish to look at after a hard day of studying/testing.

Its fine :)

dependent on size of tank/type of fish etc. its not even neccessary to really get an automatic feeder as such (though no harm in it), healthy fish, in a well maintained tank, can go 2 weeks without food (it sometimes does the spoiled little things some good! ;p ), but yes taking them home over the summer is a good idea too. However, i would worry about stress to the tank from being filled/emptied/moved fairly regularly, so perhaps, having a tank at home (with spare heater) and taking filter/light/fish with you back and for, may be a good plan :p
