so I got my new coralife 6700k 65watt pc light for my 20g tank today :), the plan is to run co2 and lay down a laterite undercoat for my sand substrate. Does this sound like a good set up for anything I so choose (qualify as "bright" light and optimum conditions for most all plants?) any other things I should consider or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i can say that its a good start :)

different plants have different requirements :) a good practical example would be this, some plants are better substrate feeders and some plants are better water nutrient feeders :) with the set up you have now a good thing to do would be to research on the plants that you would like to have in your tank :)

check out the requirements of the plants, temp, light etc etc
:) hope this help

i would also suggest getting a ph/kh test kit for your c02 :)

Sounds like the basis of a good set-up.

You have the three main factors sorted i.e. light, CO2 and substrate. You have 3.25 Watts per Gallon which should be plenty of light for most plants - ensure you use a reflector to get maximum efficiency. Aim for 20 to 30 mg/l CO2 and plant initially with fast growers to help acheive a balance from the start and prevent algae. Stock with plenty of Algae eaters i.e. Otos, Amano shrimp, possible one SAE from the outset too. If you plant heavily enough then you won't need to cycle your tank in the traditional way - the plants will look after excess Ammonia and Nitrites.

Good luck and keep us updated.

o lol forgot to mention guys this is already an established tank that's being upgraded (forgot that tad bit of info) it looks like this:

atm with a tad over 1wpg and sand substrate but the plants (other then the java fern, java moss, and hygro) aren't doing so hot so that's what the upgrades are for (and also so I can add some more "demanding" plants. I know the swords need some nice substrate so that was the reason for that upgrade and from what I understand all plants will do better under co2 and brighter light (as long none of my lower light stuff burns under the light).

Thanks for looking and the help guys (expecially the co2 numbers I'll be sure to do that :) )
