I bought a VERY pregnant Assorted Hi FIn Mickey Mouse Swordtail today. i have never heard of them before, have any of you guy's?

i haven't heard of them but would love to see pictures

This is a platy hybrid. Platies and swordtails are very closely related and can interbreed. A lot of the lyretail and hifin genes that can be found in platy stock were introduced by hybridisation with swordtails, just as the tuxedo/calico and mickey mouse genes were put into swordtails by using platies.

Usually the sword gene can be bred out when the fish wanted is a platy, but with the swordtail it often manifests itself as a slightly shorter, less ornate sword. If your fish is a female you won't be able to tell though.

Sounds nice - can't wait for pics! Hifin livebearers = HOT.

I have hi-fin platies they are so cool look at my thread i need peoples opinion off whether its pregnant or not

Yeah I love them too.
I just answered it - pretty sure the fish is pregnant, but not far along like I said in detail there.

I heard of swordtail mickeys but i think there uncommon.

That's what mine look's like, but it is longer, so it is a swordtial. I still dont see any hi fin's, but maybe this is a odd one.

That marking is genetically dominant and it produces throwbacks - you can breed two fish that don't display it and get fry that do. Not quite sure how it works because usually it's recessive traits that produce throwbacks. But anyway, only one cross with a platy produced enough 50/50 fry that had the marking to work it into swordtail lines with almost no loss of sword length. I'd be interested to see a male, and I don't think they're common. I've heard of them but never seen them.

Ive seen a male, but they were 4 dollar's per male or female, and i couldnt afford it, plus, he didnt look to hot!
