When i had blue acara he was fine with gouramis, neons ,bleeding heart tetras but the firemouth would harass hime.So it can go either way.Be careful when picking your blue acara though, i think their genes or something are getting weak and many have dull colours and may not live long.Although DA's mix could work i like the idea of dwarf south americans.Much less aggression,more pretty and won't make the fish look to big for the tank...If you know what i mean Whatever floats your boat though

sorry to sound like a noob but what are the south americans? do you mean puffers? what if i got a female fm and a male ba or female (whatever one is there, dont really care). female fms arent nearly as aggresive right?

South American Cichlids are Cichlids which are native to South America - Discus, Oscars, Severums, etc.. They tend to require soft, slightly acidic water whereas Central American Cichlids are native to Mexico, etc, and tend to require harder, slightly alkaline water. I may have got that backwards.

South American Cichlids tend to be less aggressive as they have more space in the wild and so territories can be larger and need less protecting.

fm's central,can't remember about BA's.They are not dwarfs though
