Hi all! I am new to this forum as well as being new to fish. I recently brought home a betta from a wedding and I am completley obsessed. He is red and I named him Jack. I bought him a 2 gallon tank and some fun decorations like plants and a stone archway that he could swim through. Jack is a bit self absorbed and spends a significant amount of time looking at his reflection. He then flares at it and at me. Lately I have noticed that his fins are somewhat raggity so I bought him some BettaFix in case of fin rot. I started the treatment three days ago and have not seen any improvement so far. He seems to be a little less active after I started giving him the medicine, so I hope nothing is wrong.

Can anyone clear that up for me?

Other than that, Jack is doing fine. I feed him three pellets twice a day.

Is that too much or too little or the right amount?

I used to feed him 6 pellets twice a day, and noticed he was getting a little belly on him, so I cut it down.

Could that be the cause of his inactiveness?

I mean, he still swims around, but not as much as before. He will sit between the tank wall and the plants or float at the top and stare off into space.

Does loud music stress fish out?

I like my music but he sits on my desk and the bass vibrates the tank.

Thanks for your help!

Hello and welcome to TFF!
You are feeding him just the right amount, it's more likely that he would be inactive if you were overfeeding. Try varying his diet with some frozen bloodworms or baby brine shrimp twice a week. For his tail, try putting his tank in direct sunlight for 1/2 an hour each day. That should help with his tatty fins. As far as his inactiveness, some bettas are more lazy than others. Maybe try showing him a mirror for 15 min. a day and see if he flares at his reflection. You can also try a ping pong ball, some like to play with it and push it around, others couldn't care less
The vibrations from your music could be affecting him, is there anywhere else to try and put his tank? If not, maybe turning down the base a wee bit. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your suggestions. How much do the bloodworms and brine shrimp cost? I may love Jack, but I am also a college student with no job, hence poor. I prefer to keep him in my room, as he is my fish. There is a table near a window, but that spot is taken much of the day by one of our four cats. I am going to try my hardest to keep my music down. I only have a month until I go to school. At that point he will be in the room opposite my desk, if space allows that is.

Thank you and I will keep you posted!
