Evening all!

I am new to this forum, and sort of new to freshwater tanks!

i say sort of,as i did have a three foot tank for many years, this was about 15 years ago and have recently redescovered my love for fishies ( i say fish,i have seriously fell in love with shrimp!)

We set up our new planted 2ft tank 3 months ago,and currently have 5 danios,3 Otocinclus,3 yamamoto shrimp,3 cherry red shrimp, and 2 vampire shrimp

I've joined up here so that when it all goes wrong,i've got someones ear to bend LOL!!

am currently spending all my spare time touring the local (west midlands) lfs to find some that have a decent choice of shrimp. This seems to be an impossible task!

hope to see you around!

Hi there, I am new to the forum also, thankyou for your reply to my shrimp question which I posted in that section earlier. Can't believe no one else has said hi - thought they were friendlier than that! :D

Hi, Love the shrimp you've got especially the vampire shrimp(just had a look on google for pics) I've had a couple of amano shrimp for 2yrs now and have just started a rcs tank(got them on Friday). Do the vampire shrimp have any special requirements?
Cheers
Donna

hi all! thanks for the welcome!

Mitch70-Im usually a complete thread killer on internet forums-no one ever replys to me,and even the most popular threads stop when i join LOL Its a habit i have it seems!

Donna_g My new vampire shrimp are my babies :) had them just over a week now,and they are really really shy. Have only seen one of them out in the open with the lights on a couple of times, the other stays hidden in his cave (thou if i get my torch and bend my neck at a funny angle i can peep at him so i know he is ok!)
The only special requirements they have is they need a well settled in tank with lots of algae and microbes floating about in the water as they catch the bits out of the water, they also need a strong flow of water from the filter-We have found our fluval u3 on the middle setting is more than adequate for him,but they do enjoy it at night when i turn on the bubbles to give a faster flow around the tank.

They are said to be nocturnal, but im not sure if they truly are or if they are just very timid and dont like the lights,as soon as i turn the lights off they are out waving there feathery feet about catching tea! When we 1st put them in,they dug themselves under the plantpot we had put in there for them to use as a cave (we have sand substrate) and at feeding time it was like the yamamoto shrimp knew they were shy and threw a couple of algea wafers in there cave for them!

Shrimp are the most wonderful, characterful little fellas i have ever seen and i cant believe how different they look and behave once they get settled into the home tank rather than the lfs tanks. Its no wonder not many people but them when they see them at lfs looking all pale and uninteresting, its not till you get them home they really start to shine! Our cherry reds have nearly tripled in size since we have had them, and the colours are fantastic!

I wanted shrimp in our tank,as my youngest sons favorite cuddly toy is a blue lobster (oggie) which we brought from anglesea sea zoo when he was a baby. Originally i wanted a blue crayfish, but after researching, it becme obvious that its impractical to have one of those with other fish, and we didnt have as big a tank as i would like to keep one in, So i got some "baby oggies" for him to get the little un interested in the tank. Now he loves feeding time to watch them running about with the wafers in there "hands" LOL But i am truly hooked on them,So much in fact i am setting up a smaller shrimp tank, just wish i could find more stores that had them in stock......
