I went to a new fish store today which is about an hour from my house. In that town there are 4 of them-the one that had the massive amts of dead fish (including one on the floor), Petco, J&K (haven't been to it yet) and this one. Called a couple of days ago to see if they had pristella tetras, since I wanted to add 2 more today. They said yes so we went. It was almost closing time btw. So I go in and they have only 1 pristella tetra. I didn't really want just one, and I didn't want the last one in the tank, but it looked so sad and alone I said I would buy it. I pointed to it (it was all by itself in one corner of the tank) and said I would like that last pristella tetra. I also pointed at the sign w/ the picture of one. So as he is bagging the fish I look around to make sure my kids are behaving. He takes the bagged fish to the register and I follow with 3 kids in tow. I grab a magazine on the way up there and put it on the counter. By now the bagged fish is in a paper bag. The lfs guy says he will give me the fish since it was the last one in the tank (thanks dude) and I pay for the magazine. I hand the bag with the bagged fish in it to my ds and we go out to the car.
On the way home, about 10 min away from the store, I peer into the bag. Hmm..doesn't look right. Looks more reddish than it should. I take out the bag and it's not a pristella tetra. It's a glo-lite tetra (which was in the same tank). He gave me the wrong fish. I realize that it's also my fault for not looking at the bagged fish but...somehow I figured he got the right one. WRONG.
I call on my cell and he apologizes up and down and says that I can bring it back tomorrow and exchange it. I say but I live an hour away. Can I bring it back now and exchange it? He says no, they are getting ready to close. He can't wait 10-15 min for me to come back there. Then he says "well I might wait but I can't promise anything". WTH. Okay forget it. I'll keep the fish. So as we keep going I look in there and this poor fish is suddenly looking very sad. Probably thinking about how I didn't want it and don't like it. Suddenly I like it. But I know tetras are a schooling fish and it would like a friend or two for now so I call the other lfs that is on the way home and find out that they are open for another hour. woohoo. I stop and get 2 more glo-lite tetras.
They are now in my 20g tank hiding in the plants. I was really wanting some rasboras for that tank but these are cute too and I couldn't bear to just leave one by itself. I'll go get more later this week. My heart is still breaking for that lone pristella tetra at the other lfs. If they still have it later in the week when I'm in that neighborhood I'll go back and get it.
Also an issue with the lfs and sucker fish but I'll do a different thread about that.
