Hello I'm Star, I live in western Mass. I am new to this forum and new to keeping fish. Well, I had 2 goldfish when I was a kid (Bonnie and Clyde, lol) and a Betta a few years ago. My gf has had fish forever and has gotten me into it, so I started my own tank last week. At the moment she has a 72 gal bowfront and a 30 gal, but we are in the process of moving so for now that's it. I have a 30 gal I just added fish to yesterday!! I am sooo exciited. I feel like I cheated though because after she moved her fish from the tank, she gave it to me, so all I really had to do was add half a tank of water, fix the decor how I wanted, and let it sit for a few days. But I insist that she let me do everything on my own tank, but I think I'm driving her insane with all my questions. So here are my first fish: 1 albino paradise
2 gold pristella tetras
1 albino cory
1 cory mel-something, lol, I forgot the name and am trying to find it right now online. it's mostly a slivery color with 2 black stripes, almost in a v shape, one across the backend and one across the head area.
2 cherry barbs ( my gf gave me from her tank)

I look forward to being on here, I'm sure I will drive all of you nuts as well with questions, lol.

found it, a cory melini, or False Bandit Cory. I think he's my fav so far, although the paradise is beautiful, I'll postpics soon. Cheers!

Your probably gonna get told this by some other people but if I were you I'd up the amount of tetras, they dont do too well on their own, 6 is the lowest number you'd want to have ideally. I guess the tanks been cycled or you got some media from your gf's tank.

Hope it all goes well, you should really get some pics up, i'm intruiged to see what you've got!

Oh and :hi: to the forum!

Hello and welcome to the forum

Keith.

thank you so much everyone for the welcome. Yes I know I do need to get more tetras in there, but my question is, do they have to be the same kind? Or could I have like a couple of few different kinds? I also want to get a few more corys (cories?) as I read somewhere that they also need to be in groups. Along that topic, what is the difference between a school and a shoal?? I am also going to be getting 4 or 5 Harlequin Rasboras from my gf. Yes, she moved her fish into the new tank after it was cycled and left most of the decor in there as well as about half the water, I just added water, let it run for almost a week, and then added the fish the other day. Also, one more question ( I know I need to start branching off to the other threads in here) but when I got the Paradise Fish, my gf said I couldn't have more than one male in the tank, the guy at the LFS said I could, who is right? On a side note, after I realized most of the fish I got are light colored, I thought it would look really cool to have black substrate, a black background, and all albino fish. More later, Cheers!

I dont know about the other guestions but your gf is probably right. There are only a few lfs out there that give the correct info and normally most fish do best with only one male in the group. She has probably expirenced that issue her self you should listen to her shes smart :)

Also welcome to the forum!

yes she is but don't tell her that, lol. She has been keeping fish since she was a kid, and it's amazing how much she knows. Today I added the 5 harlequin rasboras and 3 more cherry barbs, all from her tank. Friday or maybe the beginning of next week, I should probably give the tank a few days to catch up, is that enough time? I want to pick up about 4 or 5 more corys, and 3 more tetras. I am still trying to find out if they have to be the same kind of tetra. There are more fish I want to get, but I don't want to overload my tank. It's a 30 gallon, and my gf said a good rule of thumb is about 1 inch of fish a gallon. so I guess I'm still good, lol. I did take some pics last night but my god it is hard getting good ones of fish, especially the ones I like to call the crackhead corys. I"ll try taking more tonight and them upload them to the comp. Thank you for the welcomes! I suppose I should post my question about tetras in the tetra thread, lol, I also want to try out some DIY stuff on a 10 gallon I have, just to mess around and get ideas, so I'm sure I'll be all over this forum. Cheers!
