New Freshwater Aquarium

Hey guys, I fish in montauk new York, mostly for striped bass, all catch and release- I fish purely for sport. I've recently developed an interest (some would call an obsession) with freshwater fish and I want to get an aquarium. I want to have a variety of fish, including a small predatory fish like a needle nose gar. What other fish would go well in a tank with a needle nose and how big should the tank be?

Also I'd like a small catfish to add in too, I'm not looking for a massive tank and I'm on a budget as I'm only 17.

Well by "Gar" you must mean Garfish and I'm not sure, there may be exceptions, but I think most of them are predatory.
And I just looked and it seems they grow over a foot and are predatory (needle nose gar) so I'm afraid there isn't much you can do.
