Hi,

Im posting for my girlfriend.

we have had the tank for a month or so now and have had 4 silver tips with no problems,
they are darting around loving it. Then today we bought 5 black neon tetra's and 2x slightly
larger fish. I dont know the types but the pet shop guy said they go well with silver-tips.

Anyway I get the fish home and give them an hour in the bags in the water then release them.

The neon tetra's get in and play around no problem, but these other two acted really wierd. one silver one was swimming around but hiding everywhere and the orange one.. (same species) was trailing along the top then rolling around on the bottom of the tank for a bit then went swimming normally for a few moments.

After that it rolled upside down and sat on the ground not moving. I waited for a bit to see if it was ok, but wouldnt move so I tapped it a lil bit with my net and it just rolled over dead.

Does anyone know what its problem was?

First of all, fill this out, it will help folks diagnose your problem;

Tank size:
pH:
ammonia:
nitrite:
nitrate:
kH:
gH:
tank temp:

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):

Volume and Frequency of water changes:

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:

Tank inhabitants:

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):

Exposure to chemicals:

Second, I would contact the shop to find out what fish you bought. Some fish need different water conditions & such to thrive, without knowing what the fish is it's hard to provide the proper care.

We really need to know what the fish were that died.
Could you go back to the shop and ask what they were and also tell him they died. You should get a refund or replacements.

Same thing happened to me with a pleco, i went back to the store took a look at the aquarium and 6 of theres were dead.

They only gave me half price back, and it was there bad batch, so that could aslo be the problem, but i wouldnt settle for that, better to look at all possibilities.

Following the guys instructions on tops a good start ;)

that's a disgrace; my shop offers a 48hr gaurentee on fish (subject to a water test)
we will replace or refund without quibble, if our tank has gone down with something
even without a water sample.
That lfs should be ashamed

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior):
After an hour of being in the bag in the water, both fish were acting very wierd not moving much inside the bag and not moving inside the bag like the black neons.

I released them into the water, the silver fish was acting very wierd and hiding alot, but has now started to act ok. The orange one water skimming along the top of the water and then after a bit started to swim normally. After this it was rolling around on the floor of the tank and going round in circles until it died.

Volume and Frequency of water changes:
water changes every 4 days or so. water almost to the top.

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank:
aqua fresh chlorine additive.

Tank inhabitants:
4x silver tip tetras absolutely loving the tank, darting around and playing.
5x black neons enjoying the tank even though they are new.

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration):
just fish.
Exposure to chemicals:
none

they look just like these fish. but one is silver and has little different fins.

Oh and another I will add.. is that at the start of the week we took a water sample in to get checked. and it was tested normal.

I strongly advise you to get your own tests so you can monitor the water yourselves.
The tank isnt all that big so maybe the ammonia was out with the new fish going in.
The fish in the pic are platys and the other one may have been a molly.
Which filter are you using and how do you clean it?
How long has the tank been running and was it fully cycled before you added any fish?

As this is our first tank, we did not know about any of this. We cycled the tank with the silver tips in it. the filter has not been changed from original yet but I will be doing this after christmas day.

The other fish, the silver one is now hiding behind the pump.. it is still moving its fins slowly but is not really moving much.

Is this just stress?

Could be stress, could be an ammonia spike from doubling your bio load. When you return the deceased fish for credit, have them test your water, write down the numbers, & post them here. Too often folks get their water tested, and the lfs tells them "it's ok". Often ok to them isn't really ok.

yeah... ok ill do that.

Its wierd because the 5 neons are loving it. theyre darting around with the silver tips. just this lone fish is looking really unhappy.

Stress and shock also could be ph shock.
What was the ph of the store to your tank.
Wouldn't add anymore fish till the tank has cycled.

ill find that all out tomorow.

how long do I have left til its cycled?

You could have the same ph as the store, but if your tank is cycling the ph will be all over the place.
Depends on your stats we would need to look at them.
Ammonia and nitrite have to be 0.
