I am changing my filter from a fluval 206 to a fluval 406 I will remove most of the media over and squeeze the old sponges onto the new sponges.

Am I doing this right?

How long does it take for new media to become established?

Move all the old media.

It takes between six and eight weeks for new media to become colonised enough for you to start removing the old stuff, if they're in direct, physical contact. New media that's not in direct contact with already mature media takes a lot longer.

Thank you. So Just place the new and old media into the 406? Will this not clog the media up?

What you need to do is; put all the old media into the new filter; you can cut sponges up to make them fit, if needs be. Then fill the rest of the space with new media, but don't try and cram it all in, or you might affect the flow rates.

After your 6/8 weeks are up, you can, if you want, start removing the old media and putting new in, but don't take more than a quarter out at one time :)

Thank you again. Pleased I asked or I would of done it wrong

You're very welcome :)

406 filter arrived this morning. Tons of room for filter media been up and running for couple hrs now water like crystal. Brilliant filter.
