All,

I have a 45 gallon heavily planted tank. I currently have a Magnum 350 Pro cannister filter nad I absolutely hate it. It is very difficult to operate and closing it becomes a nightmare due to the snap fixtures. I want to replace this filter with something easier to use. I was thinking a power filter instead of a cannister. Will these these type of filters perform adequately with a planted tank?

People tend to get external (over and above the fact that they are probably by far the best filters you can get) as it gets a bit of kit out of the tank. Planted tanks are all about creating a certain look or 'scape' in a tank and a huge filter in the corner can ruin the effect. Thats certainly why I've switched to an external on my nano.

Have you looked at the Eheim range? I have a professional 2222 and classic 2211 both of which I would highly recommend and Eheim have a good history and track record.

Thank you for your reply. I have looked at the Eheim filters and I do believe they are the best, but they are a bit above my price range. Being also a Marie aquarist, I was thinking of using a sump type system for my planted tank in which the power filter would be attached to the sump. Do you believe this is a viable alternative?

Have heard of people trying this but think there has always been problems with CO2 and not being able to add enough as the sump generally drives it off.
