Hello all,
I am a newbie and would appreciate some emergency advice. I have enstalled an Ehiem professional filter last night, i took the filter pad from my other filter and placed it inside the new one as advised, I also added charcoal in a mess bag to stop unpleasent smell, and today the water in the tank is realy smelly and very cloudy, what have i done wrong, and what can i do to rectify this before the fish die. I have not used charcoal before.

I would appreciate any advice.

Many thanks Pebbles75

What kind of charcoal did you use and did you rinse it first? I made the mistake of using activated charcoal without rinsing it once and got a cloudy - although not smelly - tank as a result.

Stopped using it cos I kept getting airbubbles in the filter that stopped it from working properly.

Sorry I can't be any more help - please try the emergency section, or perhaps one of the mods can move the post for you....?
-_-

Good luck!
Ami

Hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

It may well be the charcoal that caused the cloudy water but may be other things. You say you took the filter pad from your other filter and installed it. I assume the tank has been running a while and you just upgraded the filter. Did you add any other media to the Ehiem such as ceramic rings? Those can also give off some residue. That still wouldn't explain the smell though.

What size tank is it and what/how many fish do you have in it? How long has the tank been running and what type new and old filter so you have (what model Ehiem)?

You also will get more replies if you PM one of the mods and have them move this to the Chit Chat section (maybe Hardware but they will decide which is more appropriate).
